Abstract

Zusammenfassung In diesem Kapitel wird über einige weitere Entwicklungen gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts berichtet, in denen die Mathematik der Knoten und ähnlicher geometrischer Gebilde zum Thema wurde. Zum einen handelt es sich dabei um Versuche, bereits bekannte mathematische Techniken auf die durch Thomsons Wirbelatomtheorie und Taits erste Schritte zur Knotenklassifikation zu einem potentiellen Forschungsobjekt gewordenen Knoten anzuwenden. Keiner dieser Versuche führte jedoch zu einer dem Tabulationsprojekt vergleichbaren Serie von mathematischen Arbeiten. Zum anderen wurde bemerkt, daß gewisse Fragen über Knoten und knotenähnliche Gebilde auch im Rahmen einer analytischen Geometrie höherer Dimensionen gestellt werden konnten. Damit kündigte sich eine Abkehr von jener epistemischen Konfiguration an, in welcher Thomson, Maxwell, Tait und seine Nachfolger das Knotenproblem bearbeiteten: Solche neuen Fragen hatten in einer Geometrie oder Topologie des „wirklichen“ Raumes keinen Platz mehr. Einige Wissenschaftler reagierten sehr scharf auf diese zunächst nur angedeutete Verschiebung der Perspektive. Dadurch wurde das Thema der Knoten und Verkettungen auch in jene Debatten verwickelt, die in den Jahren nach 1870 durch eine radikale, modernisierungskritische Wissenschaftskritik entfacht wurden, Debatten, welche weit über die unmittelbar betroffenen Wissenschaftlerkreise hinausreichten.
