Abstract

Zusammenfassung In diesem Kapitel werden zwei wichtige Voraussetzungen der Mathematisierung des Knotenproblems beschrieben. Zunächst gehe ich auf verschiedene Formen des Wissens ein, das in menschlichen Kulturen über verschlungene Fäden und Linien gesammelt wurde, lange bevor irgend jemand an eine mathematische Behandlung solcher Dinge dachte (2.1). Anschließend stelle ich dar, wie im 18. Jahrhundert eine Reihe von Mathematikern damit begannen, dem Knotenproblem verwandte Probleme zu mathematisieren, und wie dadurch auch der Boden für eine mathematische Behandlung verschlungener Kurven im Raum bereitet wurde (2.2).
