Abstract

Zusammenfassung Über seine Geburt erzählt Karl Weierstraß einmal folgende kleine Geschichte. Als sein 60. Geburtstag herannaht, geben Hermann Amandus Schwarz und seine Ehefrau Marie zu erkennen, ihm einen Besuch abstatten zu wollen. Weierstraß antwortet Marie Schwarz am 26. Oktober 1875, daß er darin einen Beweis erblicke, ihm eine Freude zu bereiten, fährt aber dann fort: „Wollen Sie mir aber gütigst verstatten, den Wunsch auszusprechen, daß mein lieber Freund und College mich zwar so bald als möglich mit seinem Besuche erfreuen möge, nicht aber am künftigen Sonntage und zu dem beabsichtigten Zweck. Das scheint zwar auf den ersten Blick keine sehr artige Antwort auf ein so freundliches Entgegenkommen zu sein– ich bitte aber meine Gründe zu hören. Zunächst gehört es zu meinen […] Eigenthümlichkeiten, daß ich niemals meinen Geburtstag feiere, auch nicht im engsten Familienkreise.“Nach den Erziehungsgrundsätzen seiner Eltern durfte in den Kindern „gar nicht die Einbildung geweckt werden und genährt werden, als ob dem Tage, wo sie das Licht der Welt erblickt, eine besondere Wichtigkeit beizulegen sei.“
