Abstract

Taking an operations management perspective, we investigate private (i.e. individual) donations of cash, time and in-kind items to humanitarian organizations. First, we examine private donors’ incentives to donate and briefly integrate the existing literature on private donations into the disaster management cycle framework. Second, we review the research on private donations of cash, time and in-kind items and identify open research gaps. Future research avenues on private donations in the humanitarian setting include online channels such as crowdfunding platforms, the variability of volunteers’ skills and experience, and an empirical approach to study people and material convergence after a disaster.
