Abstract

This chapter is a short introduction to the new paradigm of the twenty-first century digital era in which we are all immersed since the eruption of the Internet. Some of its basic characteristics are presented. It also provides an overview of the major technological forces that are shaping the face of the tourism industry and which will drive the evolution and changes of the travel sector in the next decade. The overview is provided from the perspective of the potential impact of the new digital enablers along the cycle of a tourist journey, before, during and after the travel. Concepts such as: Internet of Things, Big Data, Mobile Revolution, Cloud Services, Artificial Intelligence, Smart Wearables or Social Networks are analysed in the context of tourism.
