Abstract

G.B. Guccia’s death occurred as World War I began. As a true internationalist, he suffered at the sight of Europe destroying itself. The aftermath of the war and of the death of G.B. Guccia had serious consequences for the Circolo Matematico di Palermo and the Rendiconti. The society resisted the economic crisis and Mussolini’s regime, but the bombing of Palermo in World War II ended G.B. Guccia’s project. We finish with an evaluation of the work of G.B. Guccia and of his efforts towards the main aim of his life: the development of an international community of mathematicians.
