Abstract

The background of Giovanni Battista Guccia is presented. First, a short account of the history of Sicily. Secondly, we discuss the impact of the discovery of the asteroid Ceres at the beginning of the nineteenth century by Giuseppe Piazzi from the Palermo Observatory. The family origins of G.B. Guccia are presented, as well as details on the family’s fortune, and the practical and business-oriented atmosphere of the family. The astronomical interests of the Prince of Lampedusa, Giovanni Battista’s uncle, were part of his youth and education.
