Abstract

One of the most important issues in the 2016 elections related to the slowdown in US economic growth following the 2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and what, if anything, can be done about it. The experience over the past decade was the worst in many peoples’ lifetimes, and it contributed to anger and resentment that gave rise to populist movements around the world. The tendency for many is to point fingers at politicians, Wall Street, policymakers and the media for causing the problem or exacerbating it, rather than to look dispassionately about what happened.
