Abstract

The theory of relation algebras is an abstract algebraic version of the calculus of relations that was outlined in Chapter 1. There are four new components to the theory. First, ten simple laws from the calculus of relations have been singled out as axioms of the theory; in particular, the theory is axiomatic in nature. Second, each of the axioms has the form of an equation, and the only rules of inference that are permitted are the rule of substitution and the rule of replacement of equals by equals, both familiar from high school algebra.
