Abstract

Translational research and clinical trials are often discussed especially in academic centers from the perspective that such efforts are difficult or endangered. Yet every new therapeutic must pass through this stage of investigation where promising evidence supports staged development with the goal of product registration. Many clinical investigators instinctively know that relatively small clinical trials can be essential in translation, but this is often contrary to the statistical rigors of later development. This chapter attempts to reconcile these equally valid perspectives.
