Abstract

BAE Systems worked closely with Swansea University on the development of an unstructured mesh time domain approach for the solution of problems in computational electromagnetics. The approach adopted many of the ideas and techniques which formed part of the FLITE system, which had already proved to be very successful within BAE Systems for the simulation of realistic aerodynamic flows. The transient nature of the electromagnetics problem led to the adoption of a hybrid solution algorithm, which ensured computational efficiency by combining an explicit unstructured mesh approach with a low-operation count explicit finite difference procedure. Further efficiency was achieved by parallelisation. The approach was validated, by comparison with exact solutions for simple configurations, and with alternative numerical procedures, before it was used for practical design and analysis.
