Abstract

The preceding chapter presents procedures that construct tangent curves and lines in a variety of ways. In the design of roadways and other similar route related projects (levies, channels, and the like) the design civil engineer is faced with the need to create an alignment that is composed of a series of straight lines, circular arcs, and possibly spiral curves. When two or more circular arcs are connected to each other so as to be tangent at a point with the rotational direction remaining the same, clockwise or counterclockwise, these curves are referred to as compound curves. If the rotational direction from one curve into another curve changes direction, these curves are referred to as reversed curves.
