Highly Efficient Integrated Simulation of Electro-Membrane Processes for Desalination of Sea Water

Abstract

Electrodialysis can be used as an efficient process for sea water desalination. In this process, sea water flows through a channel with a complex spacer structure that separates the ion exchange membranes. We use a (multi-species) lattice Boltzmann method to study the hydrodynamics and ionic mass transport in this spacer filled flow channel. We present performance and scalability results of our implementation on the Cray XE6system Hermitat HLRSin Stuttgart. Overall, the high efficiency of our numerical solver allows us to study industrially relevant applications, ranging from a single spacer element to a laboratory-scale setup on this machine. These simulations result in a model that allows engineers to optimize the parameters in actual electrodialytic process installations.
