The Split-Plot Design

Abstract

For the split-plot design, we are concerned with two or more factors, but we wish for more precise information on some of them than on others. If we are interested in more accurate information, for instance, on factor B than on A, then the usual scheme is to assign the various levels of factor A at random to whole plots (main plots) in each replicate as in a randomized complete block design. Following this, the levels of B are assigned at random to the split plots (subplots) within each whole plot. Such a scheme of randomization may arise not only from the desire for more precise information on one factor that on another but also because of the nature of the factors and the way in which they must be applied to the experimental units.
