Dissertations and the Years After

Abstract

By the fall of 1961 the results of my Candidate dissertation were obtained. The next steps were: to print it, insert formulas into several copies, add binding, and what was the most important and necessary –pass qualifying exams for the Candidate’s degree: in one’s specialty, a foreign language, and philosophy. Passing the mathematics exam was no problem: S. G. Mikhlin gave me an “A” without asking any questions. That was the wondrous time (which was nearing its end) when a professor had the right to decide how he would conduct an exam, without bureaucratic supervision.
