Abstract

In this chapter we examine sample solutions to difference problems that approximate boundary-value problems for elliptic equations in curvilinear systems of coordinates. For problems in cylindrical and polar systems of coordinates we clarify the conditions for applying direct and iterative methods, in particular the alternating-directions method.
