Number Theory as a Core Mathematical Discipline

Abstract

In recent years there has been much discussion of the role of calculus in mathematics education. Calculus is the de facto qualification for entry to higher mathematics at most institutions, but is it still the best? Compare its role with that of Euclidian geometry, which was the entry qualification until last century. By the end of the nineteenth century it was clear that Euclid was no longer a sufficiently broad basis for geometry, let alone the rest of mathematics. Analysis took over because it was then the supreme mathematical discipline, and calculus was its entry point.
