Gauß und die Begründung der „höheren“ Geodäsie

Abstract

Zusammenfassung Manches ist schon über die Gaussschen Arbeiten zur Geodäsie sowie ihre Beziehungen zur Differentialgeometrie und den Grundlagen der Geometrie geschrieben und teilweise auch gestritten worden. Dennoch bleibt eine Reihe wichtiger Fragen in diesem Zusammenhang offen oder doch zumindest nur ansatzweise ausgewertet. Dabei bilden gerade Gauss’ geodätische Arbeiten der 1820er bis 1840er Jahre ein vielschichtiges Feld mathematischer Praxis, in denen vordergründig staatlich-gesellschaftliche, also der Mathematik heteronome Ziele dominierten, während Gauss andererseits die ihm als angebracht erscheinende theoretische Fundierungsarbeit in diesem Gebiet dazu nutzte, aus dem Kontext heraus unglaublich tief greifende mathematischgeometrische Fragestellungen zu verfolgen und insofern durchaus autonome mathematische Forschung zu betreiben.
