Abstract

Zusammenfassung ≪Am Anfang war Napoleon.≫2 So beginnt Thomas Nipperdey seine Geschichte des deutschen 19. Jahrhunderts. Der Sinn dieses starken rhetorischen Auftakts ist evident: Napoleon repräsentiert im Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts wie kein anderer die umwälzenden politischen Neuerungen, die er entweder selbst vollzog oder die teils in Anpassung an ihn, teils im Widerstand gegen ihn sogar noch über seinen Untergang hinaus als unaufschiebbar erfahren wurden. Das ist es, was die Sympathie begreiflich macht, mit der bedeutende Intellektuelle auch ausserhalb Frankreichs und nicht zuletzt in Deutschland zeitgenössisch Napoleon zugewandt waren. Als Beleg für diese modernitätsorientierte Intellektuellen-Wertschätzung Napoleons zitiere ich eine einzige Stimme, nämlich die des Wahlpreussen Hegel: ≪Mit der ungeheuren Macht seines Charakters hat er sich ... nach aussen gewendet≫, hat ≪ganz Europa unterworfen und seine liberalen Einrichtungen überall verbreitet.≫3
