Abstract

Zusammenfassung Das 18. Jahrhundert wird gerne als das ≪gesellige Jahrhundert≫ bezeichnet, als das Zeitalter der Salons, der Akademien, der mehr oder weniger gelehrten Gesellschaften, der Logen und Zirkel.1 Ebenso hat man dieses Jahrhundert das ≪Jahrhundert der Naturwissenschaft≫ genannt.2 Diese beiden fundamentalen Aspekte ein und derselben Epoche können in engem Zusammenhang gesehen werden; die Strukturen der Geselligkeit haben den Wissenschaftsbetrieb entscheidend geprägt, und ebenso hat das wissenschaftliche Interesse wesentlich die Formen der Soziabilität mitbestimmt.
