Abstract

Zusammenfassung Der heutige Wissenschaftshistoriker befindet sich in einem Dilemma, wenn er über das Thema ≪Wissenschaft an den Universitäten des Mittela ters≫ vortragen soll. Dieses Dilemma entsteht vor allem dadurch, dass di Vorstellung, die wir heute mit dem Begriff ≪Wissenschaft≫ verbindedurchaus nicht mit dem identisch ist, was man im westlichen Mittelalte unter dem Wort scientia verstand. Auch wenn man die ≪Wissenschaft≫ auf die ≪Naturwissenschaft≫ einschränkt — dies werde ich im folgenden tun wird die Schwierigkeit nicht geringer. Es wäre jedenfalls verfehlt, wollt man den Begriff der heutigen Naturwissenschaften auf das Mittelalte übertragen. Vielmehr sind unsere naturwissenschaftlichen Disziplinei Astronomie, Physik, Chemie, Biologie, Geographie und sonstige Geowii senschaften und auch die Mathematik, die in Wirklichkeit den Geisteswii senschaften zuzurechnen ist, in der Antike und auch im Mittelalter durcl aus unterschiedlich eingeschätzt worden.
