Abstract

Zusammenfassung Mathematik ist seit jeher ein wichtiges Schulfach, nicht immer geliebt, aber unvermeidbar und oft entscheidend für Erfolg oder Misserfolg. Mathematik ist auch ein bedeutendes Studienfach, ob als selbständige Disziplin oder als Nebenfach in natur-, ingenieur- oder sozialwissenschaftlichen Studiengängen. Im WS 1996/97 waren ca. 7000 Studierende im ersten Semester für ein mathematisches Fach eingeschrieben (vgl. [Bahne/Törner 1999]) — die Zahlen haben sich in den darauf folgenden Semestern weiter erhöht. Diejenigen, die den Abschluss schaffen, bekommen einen Arbeitsplatz, viele eine sehr gute Position, dies war so über alle politischen und wirtschaftlichen Veränderungen hinweg. War ein mathematischer Berufsweg wegen Überfüllung wenig aussichtsvoll, wurde ein neuer eröffnet.
