Abstract

The widespread identification of contemporary mathematics with the idea of structure has often been associated with the identification of the structural trend in mathematics with the name of Nicolas Bourbaki. Fields medalist René Thom, in a famous polemical article concerning modern trends in mathematical education, asserted that Bourbaki “undertook the monumental task of reorganizing mathematics in terms of basic structural components.”1 Thom further claimed that:
