Abstract

In 1930, the Dutch mathematician Bartel Leendert van der Waerden published his now famous Moderne Algebra. The book’s publication date is mentioned in many places as one of the central milestones in the development of modern abstract algebra.Thus, for instance, according to Bourbaki: Van der Waerden’s treatise, published in 1930, assembled for the first time the works of Noether, Artin, Steinitz, etc. in a joint exposition, thus opening the way and guiding many later research-works in abstract algebra.
