Abstract

Zusammenfassung August Ferdinand Möbius wurde am 17. November 1790 geboren und starb am 26. September 1868. Im Laufe seines Lebens wandelte sich die Art und Weise, auf die in Deutschland Mathematik betrieben wurde, grundlegend. 1790 gab es so gut wie keinen deutschen Mathematiker von internationalem Rang; als er starb, war Deutschland das Land und die Ausbildungsstätte der führenden Mathematiker der Welt, und die deutsche Mathematik beeinflußte weltweit die mathematische Forschung. Im Laufe dieses Buches werden wir einige der Faktoren, die diese Wandlung bewirkt haben, zur Sprache bringen. Die Veränderungen hängen mit der historischen Entwicklung der deutschsprechenden Welt zu dieser Zeit zusammen. Aus einer Vielzahl von unabhängigen Staaten entwickelte sich ein Imperium, das, wenn auch unter Ausschluß der habsburgischen Länder, seit 1871 unter der politischen und militärischen Macht Preußens vereint war.
