Über die Reduktion der binären quadratischen Formen

Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Methode, durch welche ich in den folgenden Zeilen die Theorie der Reduktion der quadratischen Formen mit zwei Unbestimmten begründe, beruht auf dem Prinzip, die „ausgearteten” Formen, d. h. die Formen mit verschwindender Determinante zu untersuchen und von diesen einen Rückschluss auf die „allgemeinen” Formen, d. h. die Formen mit nicht verschwindender Determinante zu machen. Dieses Prinzip erweist sich von grosser Fruchtbarkeit: es führt nicht nur in dem hier betrachteten Falle der binären Formen mit reellen Koeffizienten mit grosser Leichtigkeit zum Ziele, sondern es ist auch auf Formen von beliebig vielen Unbestimmten anwendbar, sei es, dass die Koeffizienten reell oder komplex vorausgesetzt werden.
