Abstract

The chapter conveys how Van der Waerden’s theorem on monochromatic arithmetic progressions in finitely colored integers became classic, a “pearl of number theory.” The story includes never before published historical discoveries—not contained even in the author’s “The Mathematical Coloring Book.”
