Abstract

The importance of publishing complete editions of the works of the great scientists of the past may be perceived more clearly through comparison of the world’s two great heritages: the artistic and the scientific. Everyone is in direct contact with the artistic heritage: we can all visit churches and at least see from the outside the great palaces and castles. Most sculptures and paintings are accessible through museums. Musical works are kept alive through the many music schools and opera houses and may even be heard at home thanks to the radio and recordings. Bookshops and libraries give us easy access to literary works of all countries and all periods.
