Abstract

Some years ago I began to study the symmetries of the exterior of the Baptistery of Pisa in the Piazza dei Miracoli systematically (figs. 1, 2). The reason for my interest was the evident clash between the symmetries of the interior and exterior of the building, a clash that noticeably reduces its harmony, and which led me to ask myself how this could have come about. The results of this examination were published, thanks to Professor Salvatore Settis, in the Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, where the interested reader can find more details.
