Abstract

This chapter provides a quantitative analysis of global capital markets for 2000-2023, based on three interconnected dimensions that enable a comprehensive examination of the structural development and dynamics of modern financial systems. This chapter explores the structure and health of capital markets under four pillars, such as depth, efficiency, breadth, and volatility, with differences between the dynamic Asia Pacific and the developed markets of Europe, the Americas, and Africa. It then compares the processes of raising capital: equity issuance is highly sensitive to the cycle, whereas debt is relatively insensitive and more deterministic (SIFMA, Refinitiv LSEG, Dealogic). Finally, the global fixed-income market is assessed (BIS, IMF), and the US-China duopoly is seen as emerging at the expense of the US-EU-Japan triumvirate.
