Abstract

This chapter reviews how cultural distance, i.e., informal institutions, has been theorized and applied in immigrant integration research, examining assimilationist, co-existence, critical, and constructivist traditions. It highlights shared insights and divergences while emphasizing persistent gaps in conceptualization, measurement, and policy relevance. Despite extensive empirical work, cultural distance remains under-theorized in relation to gender, generation, class, and intersectionality, with limited attention to temporal and local contexts. The chapter argues that future research must move beyond fragmented approaches, embracing methodological pluralism and intersectional analysis to capture the lived realities of integration.
