Abstract

Artificial intelligence is reconfiguring the media industryGlobal media industry through an algorithmic convergence of machine learning, natural language processing, and generative models that operate as self learning infrastructures. This chapter theorizes this shift as a transition from tool-based automation to meta-intelligent mediation, in which content is not merely produced faster but dynamically inferred, personalized, and monetized across platforms. Empirically, it differentiates autonomous algorithmic authorship (Associated Press Wordsmith, Bloomberg Cyborg, The Washington Post Heliograf) from augmentative co-agency (Reuters Lynx Insight), tracing a movement from manual composition to distributed agency and from static editorialism to data-responsive narration. It then examines AI-accelerated postproduction, including vision-enabled editing and multimodal recomposition (RunwayML, Adobe Sensei, Descript), and real-time translation, dubbing, and voice cloning that extend circulation across linguistic markets. The chapter further situates synthetic and interactive media, from AI-generated films and virtual influencers to metaverse storytelling, within recommendation-centered curation and adaptive interfaces (Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, Arc Bandito, TikTok). Finally, it analyzes emergent monetization architectures, including programmatic auctions, attention valuation, and churn prediction, and advances a governance framework addressing bias, hallucination, consent, transparency, labor displacement, and accountability. Collectively, these developments demand renewed theories of authorship, authenticity, and democratic media stewardship.
