Abstract

Artificial intelligence is no longer an auxiliary instrument of media production; it is becoming the cognitive infrastructure through which content is generated, sequenced, monetized, and governed. This chapter conceptualizes the AI-centric media ecosystem as an interlocking set of platforms: automated content generation, personalized delivery, predictive audience monetization, creative optimization engines, conversational interfaces and virtual influencers, synthetic media marketplaces, real-time sentiment-driven programming, algorithmically managed rights, and AI-enhanced subscription VOD. Drawing on empirical exemplars (e.g., AP’s NLG earnings reports, Netflix’s data-informed creative tooling, Persado’s language optimization, and data-to-narrative systems in weather and sports), it shows how algorithmic orchestration reduces marginal production costs, intensifies engagement feedback loops, and converts attention into forecastable revenue. The chapter then interrogates the socio-technical risks that accompany this reconfiguration: surveillance-based personalization, echo chambers, aesthetic homogenization, labor displacement, deepfake deception, and inequitable dynamic pricing. Finally, it advances a governance agenda that joins regulatory frameworks (provenance labeling, consent and data sovereignty, auditability, and fairness) with platform-level design commitments (human editorial oversight, transparent recommender controls, and rights-aware licensing infrastructures). The result is a rigorous account of media’s transition from broadcast logics to adaptive, computationally mediated economies of algorithmic intimacy, which becomes the decisive constraint on innovation’s legitimacy and public trust.
