Abstract

This chapter argues that artificial intelligence has shifted in media from a toolset to a constitutive infrastructure shaping creative practice, audience formation, and revenue realization. It specifies an AI-for-media economy in which models are trained on media signals, incentives are encoded as optimization targets, and value is created, captured, and contested through feedback loops linking attention, data, and capital. The chapter delineates this sector as a constellation at the intersection of algorithmic architectures, narrative generation, audience analytics, platform ecologies, and rights automation, then traces how generative and predictive systems reorganize production (synthetic assets, localization), distribution (recommendation, visibility), and monetization (programmatic optimization) while reallocating tasks and verification standards across human-machine workflows. A layered framework (model, product, platform, market, and normative layers) supports a logic model from inputs (data, compute, IP, labor) to outcomes (retention, ARPU upliftARPU (Average revenue per user or “per unit” in some industries), cost compression) and externalities (opacity, bias, labor displacement, misinformation). Case vignettes and regulatory-investment scanning surface governance problems of explainability, provenance, privacy, and residual rights, and show how venture finance, acquisitions, and platform integration consolidate advantage and raise barriers for independents. The chapter concludes by arguing that governance must become computable and that media power will hinge on infrastructural scale, algorithmic sophistication, and enforceable rights regimes.
