Abstract

This chapter analyzes how artificial intelligence is transforming global media industriesGlobal media industry by converging generative models, natural language processing, machine learning, and multimodal analytics into integrated pipelines for producing, editing, translating, curating, and monetizing content. It conceptualizes AI not only as automation, but as an infrastructural agent that redistributes authorship, recalibrates audience agency, and reorganizes media labor. Drawing on cases of AI-augmented journalism—Associated Press earnings reports via Wordsmith, Bloomberg’s Cyborg, The Washington Post’s Heliograf, and Reuters’ Lynx Insight—the chapter differentiates autonomous narrative generation from augmentative co-authorship, and traces a tripartite shift from manual composition to data-to-text automation, from linear authorship to distributed agency, and from static editorialism to dynamic, data-responsive storytelling. It then extends the analysis to AI-driven video postproduction (RunwayML, Adobe Sensei, Descript), real-time multilingual adaptation (transformer translation, speech systems), synthetic and interactive media (AI films, deepfake influencers, metaverse narratives), algorithmic recommendation and optimization (Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, Bandito, TikTok), and dynamic monetization regimes (programmatic advertising, attention economies, churn prediction). Finally, it interrogates risks—bias, hallucination, misinformation, consent, and labor displacement—and outlines governance principles for transparency, accountability, and culturally faithful, ethically aligned media innovation. Across these domains, the chapter offers a framework for understanding AI as both a disruptive force and a strategic enabler.
