Abstract

This chapter traces the media industry’s entanglement with artificial intelligence through a five-phase, evidence-based chronology that links conceptual breakthroughs to concrete shifts in production, distribution, consumption, and monetization. Phase I (1970s–1980s) situates symbolic expert systems as brittle yet foundational scaffolds for automated classification and workflow support. Phase II (1980s–1990s) reframes intelligence via early neural networks, introducing data-driven adaptation despite severe computational limits. Phase III (2000s–2010s) marks the probabilistic turn: machine-learning pipelines underpin recommendation engines, programmatic advertising, audience segmentation, and large-scale semantic indexing. Phase IV (2010s–present) extends capability through deep, multimodal architectures that operationalize NLP, vision, and synthetic media, shifting platforms from passive conduits to quasi-editorial agents that algorithmically curate attention. Phase V (2020s–present) consolidates generative models and LLMs as meta-intelligent systems that not only create content but also optimize their own outputs, enabling hyper-personalization, real-time translation, and synthetic personae. The chapter argues that these phases are cumulative and reflexive: each resolves and reconfigures prior constraints, accelerating an epistemic transformation from human-centered authorship toward algorithmic authorship. It closes by foregrounding unresolved ethical, regulatory, and ontological questions, proposing this historical map as an analytic compass for navigating the emergent, increasingly synthetic media order. Implications for governance and public trust are profound.
