Abstract

This chapter examines storytelling as a strategic tool in brand management and as a mechanism through which brands express identity and develop consumer–brand relationships. Building on the theoretical foundations of brand equity and brand value introduced in the previous chapter, this chapter explains how storytelling operates at the intersection of communication, consumer psychology, and culture. The chapter distinguishes between storytelling as a communicative process and brand narrative as the structured content and symbolic meaning of stories. It reviews traditional and contemporary approaches to storytelling in brand management and discusses the psychological and relational effects of narrative persuasion. Particular attention is given to brand narrative structures and narrative systems, as well as to key mechanisms such as narrative transportation, engagement, and identification. The chapter also examines archetypal theory as a framework for creating emotionally resonant and culturally meaningful brand stories. Taken together, these perspectives position storytelling not merely as a communication tactic but as a multilevel process of brand value creation that operates at psychological, structural, and cultural levels. The chapter, therefore, provides the conceptual basis for analyzing and measuring the relational effects of storytelling in the following chapter.
