Design Thinking Reconsidered: Pragmatist Roots, Phenomenological Turns, and Heidegger’s Zuhandenheit

Abstract

This paper extends the perspective in the literature of design thinking from contextual, philosophical, and historical perspectives and integrates additional essential scientific contributions to the field. As design thinking is founded within the logical Weltanschauung of pragmatism, a comprehensive history of pragmatism and its evolution toward phenomenological epistemology is described. We suggest that a synergy between pragmatism and phenomenology as a foundational philosophical bridge for design thinking is necessary to contribute to the field for more fruitful research and practical contributions. The novelty of the paper is the extended view of pragmatism based on phenomenological research, which has rarely been applied to design thinking and therefore opens new pathways for designers to enrich their theoretical and managerial mindsets from a holistic and extended lens.
