Abstract

This chapter puts the changes in the perspective of a global shift toward multipolarity, in which China seems to be in a crucial position, and the EU will still have to develop a plan and strategy. It also discusses the stances of many Western European intellectuals who seem particularly caught in an outmoded Eurocentrist worldview. Chinese modesty and non-intervention, in contrast, go along with the formula “with Chinese characteristics”, which clearly states that their approach is not considered an export commodity. The chapter adds available international polls on general trust, happiness, the relative soft power of the USA and China, increasing direct online contacts (most recently through Xiahongshu, the “Little Red Book”) between citizens from the USA and China, and the recent surge in tourism and immigration into China.
