Abstract

The years around the Society’s seventh-fifth anniversary in 2001 were not ones of unalloyed celebration. Internally the AES had begun to implement the biggest set of reforms in its history, which would ultimately put it on a strong financial basis and make it more outward-looking. But in the immediate term its membership was in sharp decline and its anniversary conference twice disrupted by distressing external events. After a period of real concern for its future, and indeed that of the agricultural economics profession nationally, the Society has survived and latterly thrived, partly by becoming more international.
