From Small to Grand Strategy

Abstract

The return of geopolitics is reshaping the strategic landscape for business. The resurgence of great power rivalry has redirected corporate leaders’ attention toward states as the central actors of grand strategy. Liberal assumptions of free trade and a rules-based international order are giving way to a realist worldview. In an era defined by realpolitik, states prioritize national security and techno-economic sovereignty, with hard power as the foundation of survival. Against this backdrop, the traditional corporate strategy playbook appears increasingly limited. To explore new possibilities for corporate strategizing in this changing environment, I advance the idea of the corporation as a grand strategy actor. How might corporations approach business through the lens of states engaged in grand strategy? And how can they align corporate objectives with the broader imperatives of grand strategy?
