Abstract

In the preceding chapters, we explored how online discussions affect security trading, including impacts on returns, volatility, trading volume, and liquidity. Scholars have also examined whether online chatter has a meaningful influence on a company’s value and reputation. If online discussions were merely noise, we would expect a decline in the number of financial social media (FSM, hereafter) platforms and participants over time.
