Abstract

The Chap. 8 deals with the years of Galiani’s maturity, spent in nostalgia for Paris and isolation in the Neapolitan intellectual context that now appeared alien to him. Galiani maintained a close correspondence with Madame d’Épinay and various exponents of Enlightenment culture, Denis Diderot, Friedrich Melchior von Grimm and Baron d’Holbach. Occupying important positions in the Neapolitan administration, the role of the Neapolitan abbot at this stage of his existence came very close to the characteristics of cameralism, especially due to his close relations with the court of Ferdinand IV and Maria Carolina. In this position as advisor, he drafted several reports on different subjects and in particular one of his essays on international law, supporting the reasons of neutral powers against belligerent parties. Although he achieved international fame by attracting the interest of some courts, such as that of St Petersburg, Galiani remained in Naples, where he cultivated various literary interests, attempting to re-edit his works (he only succeeded in updating Della Moneta with some notes) and leaving numerous works unfinished.
