Abstract

In this chapter explores the critical role of political governance in shaping a nation’s middle-class feature by examining how power is organized, exercised, and held accountable. It argues that strong, inclusive, and accountable governance systems are essential to conceive and implement effective public policies that reduce social and economic gaps. In contrast, rent-based or exclusionary political models undermine the middle-class and foster instability by concentrating power and resources among a dominant cluster. Middle-class nations are characterized by durable institutions that balance stability with adaptability, promote meritocratic leadership with clear mandates and accountability, and ensure transparency and justice through robust checks and balances. The chapter emphasizes the need for governance systems to foster innovation while preserving institutional continuity, through strategic leadership and talent management, ultimately reinforcing social cohesion and sustainable development of the nation.
