Abstract

This article aims to provide an in-depth account of the recent modifications made to the Portuguese Labor Code, thereby aligning labor regulations with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Changes focus on reducing poverty, balancing work and life, regulating telecommuting, and safeguarding informal caregivers and digital platform workers. Better conditions for collective bargaining and stronger measures against undeclared work are also highlighted. A thorough examination of the legislative changes was part of the qualitative approach. The findings suggest that these legislative modifications encourage more equitable and efficient working environments, promoting equality and long-term viability in the labor market. The main changes include new rules regarding probation periods, compensation, and tax exemptions for teleworking, reduced working hours for domestic workers, and expanded rights for informal caregivers, such as the right to holidays and flexible working arrangements. The amendments also establish more stringent penalties for undeclared employment, guidelines for employment contracts, and broader entitlements for temporary and self-employed workers in collective enterprises.
