Abstract

This introductory chapter sets the stage for an exploration into how civil resistancecivilresistance—a strategystrategy that has successfully challenged oppressive regimes and won critical social rights—can be applied to counteract the power of corporations. The chapter highlights the historical pendulum swing between corporate dominance and public pushback, tracing examples from colonial charter companies to present-day corporate hegemonyhegemony. The chapter also identifies a gap in current research: while nonviolent actionnonviolentaction has been studied extensively in political contexts, it has not been comprehensively applied to corporate accountabilitycorporateaccountability. This bookaccountability proposes to bridge that gap by examining how civil societysociety organisations can strategically mobilise nonviolent resistancenonviolentresistance to influence corporate practices, promoting accountability and restoring democratic controlcontrol. Drawing from fields such as International Political Economy, labour studies, and civil resistancecivilresistance theorytheory, the chapter outlines the journey and framework for exploring how people-powered strategies can erode corporate powercorporatepower. Through this research, the book aims to contributecontribute a nuanced understanding of corporate powercorporatepower and the potential of civil resistancecivilresistance as a tool for societal change.
