Abstract

This chapter examines the critical role of scientific expertise in maximizing the potential of research technologies within the knowledge production process. It highlights how innovation relies on the recombination of existing knowledge, which depends on the interplay between scientists’ skills and the capabilities of research tools. As knowledge accumulates, scientists face growing challenges in reaching the frontier of innovation, often requiring narrower specialization. The chapter explores how collaboration and the strategic use of research technologies can mitigate these challenges, facilitating broader recombination of knowledge and enabling continued advancements in innovation.
