Abstract

This chapter examines how board evaluations in the two-tier model can enhance effectiveness by assessing not only structural elements but also behavioral dynamics and group cohesion. It outlines evaluation approaches at the board, committee, and individual levels, emphasizing the importance of purpose, scope, and method. The chapter highlights the need to move beyond checklists by integrating assessments of group interactions, decision-making processes, and psychological safety. It also offers practical strategies for improving board dynamics, including managing composition, fostering inclusive culture, and supporting continuous development. Ultimately, it frames evaluations as tools for collective learning and long-term board improvement.
