Abstract

France, a nation forged from Enlightenment ideals rather than geographic unity, has a rich history marked by colonial expansion and cultural influence. The French Empire, once the second largest globally, shaped both French society and the world through its colonies in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The chapter explores France’s imperial strategies, driven by intellectual and civilizing missions, and the gradual loss of colonies post-World War II. This decolonization process reshaped French identity, integrating diverse immigrant populations and reorienting the economy towards Europe, despite initial economic challenges. The loss of the empire left a profound cultural impact, influencing French cuisine, arts, and societal norms, as the nation adapted to its new global role.
