Neocolonialism and Afro-Latinos

Abstract

Studies on the relationship between neocolonialism and Afro-Latinos in Latin America and the Caribbean have demonstrated the economic and social inequalities that persist in their communities in comparison to their non-Afro-Latino neighbors. In the 21st Century, countries with significant percentages of self-described Afro-Latinos such as Brazil, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic still rank at the lowest levels of capital gains, advanced education, equal employment, housing, etc. compared to their European counterparts. This chapter examines the factors under the scope of deneocoloniality apropos why Afro-Latinos in Brazil, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic continue to lag socioeconomically. In addition, the chapter investigates the cultural dominance of neocolonialism and its relationship with the Afro-Latino community. In concluding, this chapter offers policy recommendations to ameliorate, if not completely eliminate, the continuing impact that neocolonialism is having in the Afro-Latino communities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
